Cloth Diapering

This is something I got into a little later in the game. I am in no way an expert. When Jack was about 6 months old. I have to admit, what got me in first was that they are so cute! As I began to read more and more about the horrible chemicals I became more convinced to give them a try. For me it isn't an environmental thing, though that is a nice benefit. Nor is it a cost savings thing. My husband believes firmly in factoring convenience in when figuring out cost benefit and frankly cloth diapers aren't always as convenient as disposables. Saving 1-2,000 dollars during the diaper life of a baby may not be worth the time and energy that go into CD'ing especially in the beginning.

It is true what they say about cloth diapering, it is an obsession and cloth mommas LOVE to talk cloth. I think this is another one of those things that just started to make sense to me. I wrapped a disposable diaper around my arm (not nearly as sensitive skin as a baby's bottom) and a cloth one around the other arm. I walked around like that for a while, weirdo...the disposable was itchy, the cloth was like wearing clothing. It was a no brainer...why subject my child to having to have that on his, as my husband puts it, "junk"? So after some convincing with my husband (chemical talk, sperm count research, protecting our future grandbabies, yadda yadda), I bought a few different types. I got a pocket, prefolds/covers, and g-diapers (hybrids). I tested them out for the day. The research was complicated, but after a day, this CD'ing thing was no where near as confusing as I anticipated. I am now a member of the CD'ing Cult, and it is a cult, so if anyone tells you differently they are lying :)

So what do I do/use

DIAPERS: I use prefolds with thirsties or blueberry covers (I do have a flip as well). I occasionally use snappis, but generally do not. Now for my husband...CD'ing moms will joke that prefolds are not husband friendly, they are not...and frankly, for the 2-3 diapers he changes a week, I don't blame him. For him I have about 6 pocket diapers. They are velcro and he puts them on exactly like a disposable diaper.

SET-UP:

CLEANING: I wash diapers every 2-3 days. The get one cold wash with nothing in it. Then I put them in for a hot/warm wash with a second rinse cycle. I use Rocking Green detergent (2 tablespoons) I have an HE top loading washing machine.

We have stopped using Rock Green now. We were having some issues with build up and stripping. Rock Green was not going well. Maybe it is from our water. We have switched back to ALL Free and Clear.
